"The best thing about clean water is we don't get sick, and we don't have to go to another spring to get water," shared 12-year-old Joshua.

Before the Spring's Protection

Like many children in Kenya, Joshua is responsible for collecting water to meet his and his family's daily water needs. Before the protection of the spring last year, that task stole his time and negatively affected his health.

Drinking the water had severe consequences. Many in his community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems and affected their daily lives. The spring's limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The arduous journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy. Joshua, in particular, found the journey to the spring incredibly difficult.

"The drawing point had a lot of water. Sometimes, it covered the pipes. There were a lot of people fetching, too, especially over the weekend. Coming down to the spring also had bad terrain," Joshua shared.

"I like fetching water here because it looks good, and the stairs improve access a lot. We wash our hands every time to prevent ourselves from getting sick," he shared.

We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"I have been doing well in school. In our free time, we usually help our mom on the farm or go play with friends," said Joshua.

We asked him what he dreams of in the future. He said, "I would like to become a pilot."
