Story:
Imagine... waking each day knowing your daily ration of water will be less than 2 liters of water, just 1/10 of the UN minimum standard.
Imagine... being a school administrator, knowing that today you'll spend too much of your very limited resources on this tiny ration of rarely clean water for over 800 primary and secondary students .
Imagine... that when the dry season sets in, instead of learning, students will be forced to walk for miles just to collect water from polluted streams.
Imagine... not having even enough water to make concrete so that you can complete proper sanitation facilities for the girls in your care.
For the teachers and students at Kitheuni Schools in Eastern Kenya, they don't have to imagine any of it. The lack of water, even dirty water, is a daily reality.
And the problems of the schools are echoed throughout the surrounding community of over 4,000. There is simply no access to clean water.
Yet, there is still...somehow...a sense of hope here.
These students are bright, energetic, willing to learn and ready to grab hold of their future.
When they heard of how The Water Project and Charity: Water donors get involved, their faces lit up.
There is hope that somehow, some way, there will be water here soon. Hope that the hours of time lost to fetching water and laying in bed sick of diarrheal diseases will come to an end. Hope that with the tools they need, they can become hope themselves for others throughout Kenya.
Our visit that day ended in song. We sang about hope that is coming. We sang about what began that day.
